Inside out egg roll bowls are a 30 minute meal packed with flavor and nourishing ingredients. Ground turkey, veggies and a mouthwatering sauce come together for a satisfying weeknight meal.
You've tried burrito bowls and maybe even my Big Mac bowl, but what about egg roll in a bowl?
These inside out egg rolls are a fun spin on the takeout we know and love. Personally, I think the savory, salty filling of an egg roll is one of the best parts- so why not try an unstuffed egg roll in a bowl?
This recipe is definitely not traditional or authentic. If that's what you're looking for, give this recipe a try! But on a busy weeknight when I'm feeling tired and lazy, my inside out egg roll bowls are what I turn to instead of takeout.
It's comforting, filling, and still packs a healthy punch. Exactly what you need in the middle of the week!
Why This Recipe is Dietitian Approved
- Minimal prep. Very little chopping, marinating or ingredient prep required.
- Balanced meal. These egg roll bowls have carbs, protein and veggies to keep you energized and satisfied.
- Cruciferous veggies. Cabbage may not be the sexiest veggie, but we know that cruciferous veggies are rich in vitamins, minerals and anti-inflammatory compounds.
Ingredients
- Rice
- Sesame oil
- Green onions
- Ground turkey
- Fresh ginger
- Garlic cloves
- Coleslaw mix
- Soy sauce
- Rice vinegar
- Hoisin sauce
Sriracha mayo sauce:
- Plain Greek yogurt
- Mayonnaise
- Sriracha
- Sweet chili sauce
- Water
Instructions
Cook rice according to package instructions.
While rice is cooking, add sesame oil to a pan over medium heat. Once oil is hot, add the whites of the green onions (saving the greens for later). Saute until fragrant (about 3 minutes). Add ground turkey and cook until no longer pink in colour (about 5 minutes).
To the pan, add ginger, garlic and coleslaw and cook until coleslaw begins to soften (about 3 minutes). Add soy sauce, rice vinegar and hoisin sauce (if using), and stir to combine. Cover and cook until the coleslaw is soft, stirring frequently (about 5-7 minutes).
To make the sriracha mayonnaise: whisk together yogurt, mayonnaise, sriracha and sweet chili sauce. Add water by the teaspoon to thin.
To serve, serve over rice, top with the green part of the green onions and a drizzle of the sriracha mayonnaise sauce and enjoy!
Substitutions and Variations
To make gluten-free: Swap the soy sauce for tamari or coconut aminos.
To make dairy-free: Swap the Greek yogurt and mayonnaise for a dairy-free yogurt and/or dairy-free mayonnaise.
To make vegan: Swap the ground turkey for crumbled tofu, tempeh or a plant-based meatless crumble.
To make nut-free: This recipe is naturally nut-free, however it does contain sesame. Be sure to check your sesame products to ensure they are not cross-contaminated with tree nuts.
Missing an ingredient? Try these:
- Ground turkey: Swap for ground pork, chicken or beef
- Coleslaw: Swap for any shredded veggies of choice. Carrots or zucchini would be great choices.
- Mayo/Greek yogurt: As long as you have a total ¼ cup of either yogurt or mayonnaise, you can customize the ratios. Yogurt will decrease the total fat content while mayonnaise will make it creamier.
- Rice: Swap for quinoa
Equipment
Storage
Inside out egg rolls are a great option for meal prep. You can store leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days in an airtight container. The rice and filling can be mixed together or stored separately.
Top Tip
If you don't have a lid for the pan you chose, add about ¼ cup of water to your pan. This will help steam the coleslaw and prevent your filling from sticking to the bottom of the pan
Not using coleslaw mix? I recommend using a food processor to shred the vegetables you decide to use. This will speed up the process of shredding your vegetables.
Frequently Asked Questions
What type of coleslaw mix do you use?
I personally love this broccoli coleslaw! However, feel free to use any option you have available at your local grocery store.

This is seriously the best easy weeknight meal and is also amazing for meal prep… I made it three weeks in a row in November! It’s budget friendly and one of the quickest dinners I’ve ever made. I tried it with regular coleslaw and broccoli slaw and loved both. And you must make the sauce!!! Can’t recommend this one enough.Reply
